Sunday May 23, 2010: The Shaker Outdoor Track and Field Teams had another successful week competing at the Suburban Council Championships. The Boys kicked things off on Tuesday taking home the team championship title, while the girls had some impressive individual performances on Wednesday.

2010 Suburbans

The Boys team captured the Suburban Council Championship Team Title on Tuesday for the second consecutive year after also finishing 11-0 in league meets during the season. The Boys used depth to take the title by over 30 points, beating Shenendehowa 144 to 112 despite rainy conditions and a collision in the 1600M. Top six performances for the boys included: Matt Conti (3rd-400M), Chris Herman (1st-800M), Christian Delago (4th-800M), Dave Marthy (6th-800M), Mike Libruk (2nd-1600M), Ryan Egan (who finished an amazing 4th in the 1600M, despite being taken down when in the lead with 200M to go), Jon Vallecorsa (3rd-3200M), Ethan Hausamann (5th-3200M), Eric Young (6th-3200M), Brendan Dolan (2nd-110M Hurdles), Ian Weykamp (5th-110M Hurdles), 4X100M Relay-6th, 4X400M Relay (1st-Matt Conti, Ryan Egan, Chris Herman, Reuben Feinman), 4X800M Relay (4th-Caleb Mellon, Ryan Recchia, Dylan Hedderman, Jeff Heim), Casey Gilboy (1st-Steeplechase), Brian Hickey (5th-Steeplechase), Adam Schwenzfeir (6th-Steeplechase), Matt Dustin (2nd-Pentathlon), Sterling Green (3rd-Pentathlon), Tim Derocher (4th-Pole Vault), Reuben Feinman (3rd-Long Jump), Brian Gallagher (4th-Long Jump), Franklin Abban (2nd-Triple Jump), Justice Ramsey (4th-Triple Jump), David Haller (5th-Triple Jump), Naquan Lewis (1st-Discus and Shot Put), Josh Ramsey (5th-Discus and 6th-Shot Put). 2010 Suburbans

The Shaker Girls team finished 4th overall as a team at the Suburban Council Championships on Wednesday with 51.5 points. The highlight of the meet for Shaker was Freshman Madison Rowland jumping 5'2" in the high jump which tied the current school record that was set in 1995. Sheleaped higher than the second place jumper by 4" and earned 10 points for the team. The young talent of the Shaker Girls continues to be noticed week-after-week. Top performances included Carly Brundige (4th-100M), Emily Vandenburgh (3rd-200M and 3rd-Long Jump), Kristi Hayes (4th-400M), Christine Coughlin (6th-800M), Emma Torncello (4th-100M Hurdles and 5th-Long Jump), 4X100M Relay (1st-Carly Brundige, Kristi Hayes, Emily Vandenburgh, Madison Rowland), 4X800M Relay-4th, Madison Rowland (1st-High Jump), Julia McCane (5th-Pole Vault), and Viola Pawlak (6th-Discus). This Week: The Shaker Teams will compete at the Class A Sectionals this week. The Shaker Girls will compete on Wednesday (5/26) at Queensbury High School beginning at 4:00pm. The Boys will return to Shenendehowa on Thursday (5/27) at 4:00pm, and will look to defend their Sectional Title. Class A Teams include: Shenendehowa, Schenectady, Albany, Saratoga, Shaker, Guilderland, Colonie, Bethlehem, Columbia, Ballston Spa, Niskayuna, Troy, Amsterdam, Queensbury, LaSalle, and C.B.A.. The scheduled order of events is as follows:

Boys Outdoor Track Banquet: The Boys Outdoor Track end of the season banquet will be held on Wednesday, June 9th at the Colonie Elks Pavillion. The cost of the banquet will be $7.00 per person. Please bring payment by June 1st (Checks made out to: Shaker All Sports Booster Club).

Spotlight on Sophs: The Shaker Sophomores (Class of 2012) are showing signs that the Shaker team is likely to continue to battle for championships for a while longer. In looking at the Armory track rankings for Section 2 athletes, several Shaker team members are at or near the top individual performances among sophomores in Section 2 this season. Mike Libruk is listed at #1 for the 1600M (along with the 1500M), in the 3200M Jon Vallecorsa is #1 and Ethan Haussaman is #2, Brian Hickey is #1 in the 3000M Steeplechase, Christian Delago is #2 in the 800M. Ryan Recchia is also among the top sophs in the 1600M and 3200M. In fact, all six of those soph distance runners have met the standards in two events for the State Qualifying Meet. In field events, the Shaker sophs are also impressive. Among sophomores in Section 2, Franklin Abban is # 2 in the triple jump and #6 in the long jump, Sterling Green is #3 in the high jump and #2 in the pentathlon, Justice Ramsay is #3 in the triple jump and Josh Koppel is # 2 in the pole vault. Shaker Girls who are leaders among sophomores in Section 2 are Emily Vandenburgh who is listed in the long jump (2nd), 200M (3rd) and triple jump (4th), Emma Torncello in the long jump (3rd), 100M Hurdles (3rd) and triple jump (5th), Kristi Hayes in the 400M (4th) and 200M (8th) and Suzanne Zoufaly who is listed 5th among local sophs in the pole vault. The many talented Shaker athletes in other grades will be featured in future editions of the Inside Track.
