Thursday April 8, 2010: The Shaker teams got the Outdoor Track season off to a good start with each capturing two victories in their first League Meets of the season, as well as having athletes compete at the Fonda-Fultonville Pentathlon/Steeplechase meet.

At their first league meet of the season on April 1st, the Shaker girls had several strong early season performances, propelling the varsity team to victories over both Shen (102-72) and Mohonasen (111-65). Shaker Girls League Meet #1 Photo Gallery
The Shaker Boys teams were equally successful, defeating both Bethlehem and Ballston Spa 101.5 to 70.5 and 103 to 77. Shaker Boys League Meet #1 Photo Gallery

In addition to the strong league meet performances, several Shaker athletes competed at the Fonda-Fultonville Pentathlon/Steepechase meet this past Thursday. Shaker 8th grader Laura Libruk represented the Shaker Girls, placing second overall for the 7-9th grade girls in the steeplechase. On the boy’s side, Mike Libruk and Adam Schwenzfeier placed 2nd in the sophomore and freshman steeple races respectively. Casey Gilboy (junior), Brian Hickey (soph), and Eric Young (senior) all finished in the top 10 in their age races to also earn medals. The highlight of the day was junior Brian Gallagher’s new school record performance in the pentathlon, winning the five event competition with 3004 points, breaking the 2004 record by over 30 points. In addition, Shaker senior Matt Dustin placed 11th in the 30 athlete field at the end of the five event pent. The steeplechase and pentathlon provided a good opportunity for Shaker athletes to gain valuable experience in these rare events. In the steeplechase the athletes run 3000M (just short of 2 miles), jumping over 35 steeple barriers in the process, including one jump over a water pit on each lap. In the pentathlon, athletes compete in five different track events including hurdles, 1500M run, high jump, long jump, and shot put. The athletes are awarded points for each event based on their performances. The athlete with the most points after the fifth event is declared the winner. Shaker was well represented in these exciting events. Fonda/Fultonville Photo Gallery / Results
