Sunday April 25, 2010: This past week was an exciting one for both the Shaker Boys and Girls Track Teams. Athletes competed in League Meet #3, Penn Relays, Hudson Falls Invitational, and Cohoes Relays.

PENN RELAYS-Both the Shaker Boys and Girls Teams sent athletes to compete at the famous Penn Relays in Philadelphia this past Thursday through Saturday. The Shaker Boys 4x1ooM Relay finished 5th in heat 24 in a time of 45.18. The Shaker Boys 4x800M Relay (Dave Marthy, Ryan Egan, Mike Libruk, Matt Conti) took 5th in their heat in a time of 7:55.98, and just missed qualifying for the Championship race the following day. The Shaker Girls 4x800M Relay took 14th place in Heat 1 with a time of 9:31.00, less than six seconds off the school record in that event. Jaquell Chandler was the only Shaker runner competing as an individual, placing 10th in the Championship race for the 400M Hurdles in 55.21. It was a new PR for JQ and moved him further up the all-time Section 2 list for that event. The Girls 4x400M Relay (Kristi Hayes, Carly Brundige, Emily Vandenburgh, Christine Coughlin) finished 6th in their heat. The Boys 4x400M Relay (Matt Conti, Brendan Dolan, JQ Chandler, Reuben Feinman) captured 5th place in their heat with a time of 3:21.59 led by Matt Conti's 48.7 split for his 400M. The Shaker Girls 4X100M Relay (Madison Rowland, Carly Brundige, Kristi Hayes, Emily Vandenburgh) were 3rd in their heat with a time of 50.95 just a second off the girls school record set last year.

At their third league meet of the season, the Shaker girls defeated Nisky by 70 points while losing their first league meet of the season to Colonie by a score of 96.5 to 83.5. The Shaker Boys teams continued their undefeated league season (6-0) with wins in their third league meet over Colonie (104-76) and Guilderland (121-60). Shaker Boys League Meet #3 Photo Gallery
In addition to the strong league meet performances, the Shaker Boys competed at the Cohoes Relays this past Saturday. It was a great opportunity for athletes to run in different events or at different distances. Many athletes returned home with awards as the top four relays in each event received t-shirts and the top eight recieved ribbons. Highlights included Casey Gilboy 2nd in Steeplechase (beating his 2009 time in the same meet by 19 seconds), 4X800M Relay (Andrew Olsen, Jeff Heim, Kyle Foster, Jesus Vazquez) finishing 1st led by Kyle Foster with a new PR, DMR (Jon Vallecorsa, Ryan Recchia, Ethan Hausamann, Eric Young) in 3rd, Shot Put Relay (Mendez, Gallagher, Dustin) 3rd, Pole Vault relay 3rd led by Tim Derocher clearing 13 feet for the first time, and the Freshman 4X400M (Adam Schwenzfeier, John O'Connor, Rob Smith, Caleb Mellon) also taking 1st. The Shaker Girls competed at the Anthony Luciano Hudson Falls Invitational while the boys were at Cohoes Relays, and finished 2nd behind Guilderland in the 23 team field. Top performances included: Emily Vandenburgh Triple Jump and 200M (1st and 3rd), Kristi Hayes 400M (1st), 4x400M Relay (1st-Carly Brundige, Christine Coughlin, Zosia Dunn, Tirzah Ziegler), 4x800M Relay (1st-Kayleigh Lavender, Molly Nephew, Melissa Sheridan, Emily Franko), and Emma Torncello Long Jump (2nd). This Week: On Monday, April 26th the Shaker Girls will compete at a JV Meet at Burnt Hills starting at 4:00pm. The following day on Tuesday, April 27th the Shaker Boys will compete at a JV Meet at Shenendehowa beginning at 4:00pm. These meets will provide JV athletes with a great opportunity to compete and continue to improve their performances.
The Shaker Girls will also be attending the Schenectady Invitational on Tuesday, April 27th starting at 4:00pm at Schenectady High School. On Saturday the Shaker Boys and Girls will compete at the Colonie Relays at Colonie High School. Frosh-Soph events will be held in the morning and Varsity events in the afternoon, in order to allow Varsity athletes to take SATs in the morning. This meet promises to be an exciting day, especially as the Boys team attempts to capture a third consecutive Colonie Relays Championship.
