2010 Suburban Council Champions:

Sunday February 7, 2010: The depth of the Shaker Boys was the key to the team bringing home another team title…this time in the Great Dane Classic that was held a UAlbany on February 7th.
Reuben Feinman won the 300M and leaped a season best in the long jump. Brendan Dolan scored points in the 300M and the 55M Hurdles with his season best times in both events. Casey Gilboy (2nd) and Jon Vallecorsa (6th) both scored in the 1600M while Kyle Foster (4th) and Eric Young (6th) each scored in the 3200M. Sterling Green tied for second in the high jump and Tim Derocher finished fourth in the pole vault. Franklin Abban improved on last week’s PR in the triple jump with his 4th place leap of nearly 42’ while Nequan Lewis (2nd) and Carlos Mendez (6th) each scored in the shot put. DJ Roberts scored in the 55M and was part of the 4th place 4x200M team along with Ian Weykamp, Sam Spiro and Dave Haller. Brian Gallagher finished 4th in the 55M Hurdles and the 4x800M relay team of Olsen, Hedderman, Alvarez and Mellon earned 4th place. Other notable performances with personal bests were Jesus Vasquez in the 1000M, Brian Hickeyin the 600M as a replacement for Andrew Olsen, Ethan Hausamann in the 1600M and Dave Marthy in the 3200M. It was especially impressive that the Shaker team was able to win the team title in the 26 team field with at least seven of the team’s top runners sitting out the meet. Boys Results
The Shaker Girls finished 4th of 29 teams in the Great Dane Classic. The relay teams, as they have done all season, provided key points in the meet. The 4x200M relay of Emily Vandenburgh, Carly Brundige, Kristy Hayes and Hannah Madison finished second while the 4x400M team of Vandenburgh, Hayes, Christine Coughlin and Zosia Dunn was 4th in their race. The 4X800M relay of Dunn, Coughlin, Melissa Sheridan and Molly Nephew finished second to earn more important points for Shaker. Individual points were scored by Dunn (3rd) and Sheridan (6th) in the 1000M and Vandenburgh added a 4th place finish in the triple jump. Girls Results

The 4x800M relay time by Christian Delago, Matt Conti, Ryan Egan and Chris Herman at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational is not only the fastest time in Section 2 since 2006, it is the fourth fastest time in that event in the United States this year. The outstanding time by Shaker of 7:52.99 is a reminder of the amazing All-time Section 2 Indoor record by another Shaker team (7:42.84 in 2005), which was about 10 seconds faster than any Section 2 team has ever run that event. Shaker now has three of the fastest 4x800M times on the Section 2 All-time Leaderboard.
The next meet in which Shaker runners will be eligible to run is a new addition to the schedule. It will be held on Monday, February 15th at Union College in Schenectady from 8:00 AM– noon. More information about the entered athletes will be provided this week by the coaches. It is an all-comers meet in which a limited number of running events will be held and will provide athletes a final opportunity to meet the standards for eligibility to compete in the Section 2 State Qualifier Meet on February 27th.
Special recognition to Nequan Lewis who won Shot Put in the Suburban Council Championships with his first throw over 50 feet and also to Connor Brant who cleared 11’ for the first time to score in the Pole Vault…an event in which he only began competing within the past month.
Updated Team Leaderboards will be posted early this week as soon as they are received from the coaches. Performances continue to improve as we move through the Championships meets. Update: 2/8/10 Boys Indoor Leaderboard
