Sunday February 21, 2010: The Shaker teams competed at the Division I Sectional Championships this past week.
The meet started last Thursday with the shot put and pole vault portion of the meet contested at Shenendehowa, where Shaker's entire varsity team traveled to the meet in order to cheer on their teammates. The Shaker throwers got things off to a good start with Nequan Lewis, Carlos Mendez, and Josh Ramsay taking 2nd through 4th, with Mendez and Ramsey throwing big PRs in the process. In addition, Carlos Mendez threw a Shaker Junior Grade Record with his new PR, throwing close to 50 feet, making him a huge threat for next year's Indoor Track season. Shaker pole vaulters Tim Derocher (3rd) and Connor Brant (5th place tie) followed up by scoring additional points in an effort to keep Shaker and Shen neck and neck going into Saturday's meet.
While only three Shaker athletes, Chris Herman (600M), Matt Conti (300M) and Brendan Dolan (55M Hurdles) actually won individual events, the depth of the team is what propelled Shaker to the team title over tough competitors like Shen, Bethlehem and Albany High. In addition to their individual wins Conti, Herman and Dolan also contributed important points in other events. They were joined in individual event scoring on Saturday by Reuben Feinman (300M), Ryan Egan (1000M and 1600M), Dave Marthy (1000M, setting a new junior grade record), Casey Gilboy (1600M), Eric Young (3200M), JQ Chandler and Brian Gallagher (55M Hurdles), Sterling Green (High Jump), and Franklin Abban and Dave Haller (Triple Jump). The three Shaker relay teams all finished in the top three in each race to help assure the victory. This championship was the second consecutive Shaker Sectional title. Prior to last year, the team had not won Sectionals in over 30 years. As Coach Stadtlander stated, "It was a total team effort that everyone should be extremely proud of. To win in back to back years is truly a testament to the hard work and dedication of our athletes and coaching staff. This is what a team is supposed to be!" Results

The Shaker Girls team finished fourth in Division 1 in Saturday’s Sectional Championships. The three relay teams combined to earn 16 of Shaker’s 39 total points for the day. In addition, individual scoring was provided by Carly Brundige (55M and Long Jump), Christine Coughlin (600M), Zosia Dunn (1000M), Molly Nephew, Hannah Madison and Julia McCane (High Jump) and Emily Vandenburgh (Triple Jump).
