Tuesday December 29, 2009: The Shaker Boys team had several strong performances in the Marine Corps Holiday Classic this past Monday (12/28). Christian DelagoThe day began with the athletes arriving at 5AM at the school to depart for the Armory Track and Field Center in NYC. The Freshman Boys 4x400M team (O'Connor, Catrine, Weykamp, Mellon) took home first place medals with a time of 3:49.83 crushing the competition, more than 6 seconds ahead of the second place team. The sophomore boys 4x800M team finished an impressive second led by Christian Delago's 800M anchor leg in 2:00.6! The Shuttle Hurdle Relay team of Weykamp, Dolan, Gallagher, and Chandler finished 3rd only .3 seconds out of first place. In the varsity boys championship DMR race, the Shaker boys (Libruk, Conti, Herman, Egan) finished 2nd against some of the strongest teams in the Northeast with Ryan Egan anchoring in a 4:24 1600M split. The boys also had success in the shot put with the team of Lewis and Ramsey placing 3rd, and Mendez and Brochu taking 6th overall. The Shaker team showed their depth and are only expected to improve in the upcoming meets. Results

The girls indoor track team joined the boys this year and traveled down to NYC’s Armory Track to participate in the annual Marine Corps Holiday Classic. Zosia DunnThere were strong performances by all girls competing throughout the day. Shaker’s distance girls earned medals in both the 4x800 and the DMR. The DMR finished 2nd out of 61 varsity teams with a time of 12.43.59. Molly Nephew started off the race with a PR in the 1200, followed by Emma Risler with a new indoor 800M PR of 2.22. Christine Coughlin, the 400 leg, received a season PR of 62, and Zosia Dunn finished strong with a PR of 5:19 in the mile. This time would have placed them 5th if they raced in the Championship DMR. Shaker’s sprinters also produced strong times throughout the day. The SMR finished with a time of 4.52.43 and the 4x200 finished in 20th out of 105 teams with a time of 1.51.14. Apart from the Varsity team, strong performances were put forth by many of the younger members of the team. The sophomore 4x400 relay placed 13th and on the freshman level, the 4x400 team placed 6th in their race, and 12th in the 4x200. Results

Some of the boys and girls Shaker runners also competed in League Meet #3 at HVCC on Tuesday morning. The Boys team was represented by only a small portion of the team as most of the team members had run the previous day at the Marine Corps Holiday Classic. Top performances included: Carlos Mendez 6th in the 55M; Rob Smith in the 55M; Adam Schwenzfeier 6th in the 1600M; Ethan Hausamann 1st and Ryan Recchia 3rd in the 3200M; 4x200M Relay 4th; 4x400M Relay 4th, David Haller was 1st in HJ, 2nd in LJ, and 2nd in TJ; Nequan Lewis, Josh Ramsey, and Carlos Mendez went 2nd-4th in the shot put. The Girls finished a close second as a team, just five points out of first place Holy Names. Top three finishes by: Carly Brundige 2nd in the 55M; Emily Vandenburgh 2nd and Carly Brundige 3rd in the 300M; Christine Coughlin 1st in the 600M; Emma Risler, Zosia Dunn, Melissa Sheridan 1st-3rd in the 3000M; Alyssa Plue 1st in the 55M Hurdles; 4X400M Relay Team 2nd; and Molly Nephew 3rd in high jump. The next meet for the boys and girls teams is League Meet #4 at HVCC 1:15PM on Sunday, January 3rd.
