Shaker’s Boys team captured Saturday’s Suburban Council Championship by placing five runners in the top twelve. Shaker had 41 points to defeat their closest rivals Burnt Hills (82 points), Saratoga (89 points) and Shenendehowa (97 points). Christian Delago (3rd overall) led the five scorers by completing the Saratoga State Park course faster than any Shaker athlete has ever run the 3.04 miles by surpassing Justin Corelli’s 1999 time. Mike Libruk (7th in the race and #3 all-time for Shaker on the course), Jon Vallecorsa (8th in the race and #5 all-time for Shaker on the course), along with Casey Gilboy (11th) and Kyle Foster (12th) (who both had a personal best on the course) brought home another championship for the undefeated Shaker team. They were joined on the Varsity team by Ryan Recchia (25th in race and his second best personal time over the course) and Adam Schwenzfeier (30th in the race and his PR on the course).

The JV again dominated their race by capturing the first four places and scoring only 19 points to easily defeat their closest rivals Saratoga (66 points) and Shen (72 points). Shaker’s top six JV runners also finished among the top 60 all-time performances for Shaker runners over the Saratoga course. Other Shaker runners finishing among the top 35 in the 176-runner JV race were Dan Ruiz (14th), Max Morgan (17th), Rob Smith (26th), Brian O’Connor (27th), Greg Hickey (30th) and Connor Dodd (33rd). The top finisher for Shaker in the Boys Frosh race was Kaushik Pilar in 23rd place.

The Girls Varsity team was led by Christine Coughlin in 12th place, who completed the course in the third fastest time ever for a Shaker runner. Other scorers for the 7th place Shaker team were Kayleigh Lavender, Melissa Sheridan, Blair Burke, and Laura Libruk. The top seven finishers for Shaker’s JV team were Emily Franko, Taylor Menthe, Jessica Dzialo, Kristy Hayes, Laura Hines, Amanda Sacca and Anne Rehfuss. The Suburban Council Championships marked the end of the season for most of the Shaker runners. Many Shaker Seniors completed their last high school cross country race. The top ten Shaker Boys and Girls will continue this week, competing at the Class AA Sectionals on Friday at Saratoga State Park with the girls scheduled to begin at 10:00am and the boys at 12:30pm. At Sectionals, the winning team in each class plus the top five individuals not on the winning team will advance to the NYS Meet. The Shaker Boys are favored to win the Class AA title, and the winner will advance to the NYS Championships the following week. While the Saratoga girls are favored to win the AA title, indiviudal members of the Shaker girls team led by Christine Coughlin, will also be competing for one of the five individual spots from Section 2 in the NYS Championships.

Thanks to Mr. Fallon, Mr. Hines, Mrs. Hickey, Mrs. Gilboy and Mr. Dodd for contributing photos this week!
